1840 Household Serial Number

Hello,

I'm looking at the US census data from 1840 and I'm curious about the household serial number variable. Does this correspond to a geographical location, such as an address or a long/lat pair (i understand the latter is highly improbable)? Just wondering if the greatest level of detail stops at the state/county ids or if it goes further. Thanks!
