How can I connect the data file to Tableau? I decompressed the file and tried converting it to a text file.

I tried converting the file to a text file, but it messed the data up. Tableau cannot connect to a dta file. Any suggestions on how I can connect the data to Tableau?

The simplest way to get IPUMS data into Tableau is to reformat your data extract as a csv file. From your extracts page, you can revise your extract and then change the data format from .dat to .csv. Once you extract the .csv from the zipped file, you should be able to easily connect it to Tableau using the option to connect to a text file.
