How could I search for the number of men in the payrolls of Minnesota railroads in 1880?

You can identify the number of males living in Minnesota and working for a railroad company at the time of the 1880 Census by using our NHGIS data project. You should filter your 1880 state-level data query by the topics Sex and Occupation/Industry. The tables “NT27. Employed Persons by Occupation by Sex” and “NT28. Employed Persons by Occupation by Age by Sex” both report counts for officials/employees of railroad companies. These summary tables can be extracted as .csv files with optional descriptive headers.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, That’s is what I ended up doing and it worked!
