I need 1988-96 wage estimates for different occupations pertaining to different industry groups

Hello,

Please can anyone suggest search heuristics in obtaining occupational-level wage estimates by industry for the period between 1988 and 1996? The Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) of U.S. Department of Labor provide data on these only from 1997 onwards. Many thanks in advance.

James

If you are looking for published tables from these years, it appears that the Bureau of Labor Statistics does have Employment Estimates for 1988-1995, but these do not contain wage estimates. I could not find any information on whether wage estimates were generated for these years, so I would recommend getting in touch with the Office of Employment and Unemployment Statistics, whose contact information is at the bottom of the linked page.

I hope this helps.

Hi Joe,

Many thanks for the reply. Is there any way to construct these data on IPUMS-CPS though? The author of this academic paper I read (Donangelo, A. 2014. Labor mobility: Implications for asset pricing. Journal of Finance. 69(3), pp. 1331) also encountered the problem of limited data availbility on OES, and mentioned he obtainted part of the '90-'96 wage estimates through IPUMS-CPS.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

James

It is possible to generate estimates of median earnings by occupation and industry using the IPUMS-CPS data. The variables you would be interested in are in the Person->Income and Person->Workvariable lists. I highly recommend selecting the samples you are interested in first so that the lists of variables are limited to only those that appear in at least one of the samples you will be using. Also, if this is your first time using IPUMS-CPS, I would recommend looking through the Frequently Asked Questions page, paying particular attention to the Basic Concepts and Getting Data sections.

I hope this helps.
