I'm trying to get complete count data for two California counties (Merced and Los Angeles) from the 1850 U.S. Cens

It is possible to limit your sample to a select state, but not a select county. This is because the county variable, in IPUMS, is state-dependent. To limit by state, include the STATEFIP variable into your data extract. Before submitting your extract use the "Select Cases" option, select STATEFIP, and choose the states in which you would like to limit your sample. This should do the trick.

I'm trying to get complete count data for two California counties (Merced and Los Angeles) from the 1850 U.S. Census. Is the complete count data for 1850 available? If so, is it possible to limit the download to one state or, ideally, one county, to reduce the size of the file?
