Question

Status:Closed    Asked:Dec 04, 2018 - 05:40 AM

Is there a more detailed key for variables?

I have extracted data at the individual level but cannot make sense of some of the variables.

For example incomewage goes from 1-999,999 with a mean of 215,000, what is the unit of measurement? This is too high to be the average wage in US Dollars.

The occupation has all numerical values, where can I find a legend for these values?

Many thanks,

Pete

These are good questions. IPUMS USA has detailed documentation about variable codes available on the website. Specifically, the codes tab for the INCWAGE variable indicates that values of 999999 indicate "N/A" and values of 999998 indicate "Missing". Similarly, the occupation categories associated with the numeric values found in the data can be found on the codes tab for the OCC variable. I hope these tools are helpful.
