Table for race / ethnicity by age?

I’m using the NHGIS and I would like a table that provides data at the place level for race and ethnicity by age categories.

The closest I can find is “NP008A. Population by Hispanic or Latino and Not Hispanic or Latino by Race” – I am provided with the following 14 variables:

Not Hispanic or Latino >> White alone
Not Hispanic or Latino >> Black or African American alone
Not Hispanic or Latino >> American Indian and Alaska Native alone
Not Hispanic or Latino >> Asian alone
Not Hispanic or Latino >> Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone
Not Hispanic or Latino >> Some other race alone
Not Hispanic or Latino >> Two or more races
Hispanic or Latino >> White alone
Hispanic or Latino >> Black or African American alone
Hispanic or Latino >> American Indian and Alaska Native alone
Hispanic or Latino >> Asian alone
Hispanic or Latino >> Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone
Hispanic or Latino >> Some other race alone
Hispanic or Latino >> Two or more races

HOWEVER, this is not by age. Do you have any suggestions? I want a similar table to the one above with the addition of age categories.

I know of two options that may fit your needs, both of which will require additional data processing to generate the table you want.

First, you can look at the NP012A-NP012H set of tables. These provide you with Sex by Race by Age breakdowns (2 sex categories, 23 age categories and 7 race categories), Sex by Hispanic by Age breakdowns, and NP012H provides you the Sex by White Alone, Non-Hispanic by Age breakdown. You will have to sum the Sex categories together to get just Race by Ethnicity by Age.

Please note that this set of tables does not provide you with a Hispanic/Not Hispanic by Age breakdown for the other 6 races!

Second, if you do want the Race by Ethnicity by Age table, you will need to get it from 2000 SF2 dataset and do some additional processing.

The 2000 SF2 table “NPCT003b. Sex by Age” provides you with 103 age categories by 2 sex categories. Once you’ve added it to your cart, you can move onto the Options page.

Here, you can select the Race/Ethnicity breakdowns for which you want the Sex by Age table. If you click on the Race/Ethnicity link under BREAKDOWN, you will see a pop-up window listing many race/ethnicity combinations.

You will want to click the checkboxes next to:

White alone

Black or African American alone

American Indian or Alaska Native alone

Asian alone

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone

Some other race alone

Two or more races

You will get the Sex by Age table for each of these Race categories (e.g., 206 columns of data - 103 age categories by 2 sex categories).

Then, you want to scroll all the way to the bottom of the pop-up and click the following checkboxes:

White alone, not Hispanic or Latino

Black or African American alone, not Hispanic or Latino

American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) alone, not Hispanic or Latino

Asian alone, not Hispanic or Latino

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHPI) alone, not Hispanic or Latino

Some other race alone, not Hispanic or LatinoTwo or more races, not Hispanic or Latino

These are the Not Hispanic by Race breakdowns. Next, click Continue to move onto the Review page. Choose your output file type (CSV vs Fixed width). You can also choose to have the breakdowns merged together into one file or kept separate. I recommend keeping the breakdown separate.

You should then submit your extract and download when it’s ready.

In order to get the data you want, you will need to do the following:

 1. Collapse the sex and age categories together to get whatever age bins you want. You will need to execute this collapse for each breakdown category.

 2. Merge the “White alone” collapsed file with the “White alone, Not Hispanic or Latino” collapsed file.

 3. Subtract the “<Race>, not Hispanic or Latino” counts from the “<Race>” counts. In other words you will subract “White alone, not Hispanic or Latino” count from the “White alone” count. This difference is the 'White alone, Hispanic or Latino" count for the given age group.

 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all additional race categories.

A third option in addition to the two offered by Dave Van Riper:

Table NPCT012H in dataset 2000_SF1a reports the non-Hispanic/Latino population by race by sex by age, using detailed (103) age categories.

To compute counts for the Hispanic/Latino population by race by sex by age, you could subtract the counts in NPCT012H from counts in NP012D (race by sex by 23 age categories) or in NPCT012D (race by sex by 103 age categories).
