Hi,

I have a question about UHRSWORKORG, I think the documentation in IPUMS is incomplete:

According to this, the codes are 0 for NIU, and 998 for Don’t know. But most of the values for UHRSWORKORG are 999. I’d like to know what 999 refers to.

The universe is also described as all Employed civilians 15+ in outgoing rotation groups, excluding self-employed persons. But huge numbers of individuals within this universe have 999 entered for UHRSWORKORG.

The values of 999 represent respondents who are not in the universe. Keep in mind that this question was asked only to those outgoing rotation group respondents who reported being paid by the hour. This criterion is mentioned in the variable description, but you are correct that it should also be mentioned in the Universe statement.
