question about 'total family income'

Hi Joe,

I have a question about FTOTVAL. According to the variable description. It is the total income for the respondent's family. Does this income include self-employed income? If one person in this household work for a company and work as a Uber driver in his free time. Does the income from driving for Uber counted in FTOTVAL? Does this income must be on the government payroll?

Thanks!

The FTOTVAL variable represents the total income from all sources for each family - including self-employed income. So, yes technically speaking income made as an Uber driver should be included in FTOTVAL, since income earned from driving an Uber must be self-reported via a 1099 tax form.
